So the craziest thing happened while I was in New York this month. As I’m finishing up Michelle & Rob’s engagement session, we’re walking out towards Pier 45 at Hudson Park and pass by a nicely dressed gentleman who happens to stop us along our walk. Turns out to be an old school friend of Michelle’s! Jimmy & Michelle hadn’t seen each other in years but like most of us, keep in random contact on Facebook. Jimmy asks what we’re up to and we explain we’re just finishing up their engagement photos, he then says: “Well that’s crazy, I’m about to propose to my girlfriend in an hour right out on that same pier.” !!! There’s no way I could pass up the opportunity to photograph something so awesome so I immediately asked if he’d like me to shoot it for him. I think it definitely caught him off guard for a minute, but after a quick thought, he said he’d absolutely love it. We exchanged phone numbers and I told him to text me when he was a few minutes out, and off he went to get prepped for the big moment. An hour later after finishing up Michelle & Rob’s shoot, my assistant Jessica and I find a nice little spot on the pier with these two random guys me meet, Erhan & Barbaros. Erhan happens to work for the NYPD and is filming a documentary on his life with the police force, so they’ve got tripods and cameras all set up on the pier, a perfect place for us to look inconspicuous and hide out until Jimmy shows up with his soon to be fiancee. A few minutes later I receive a text from Jimmy: “Be there in 5”. I can only imagine what he’s going through as we see him round the corner with his gal. Our hiding spot seemed to have worked pretty well as they walk right past us and head towards the end of the pier. As soon as they get past us I start shooting away and have Jessica stand between them and myself so it at least looked like I was photographing her. It was the greatest thing ever to watch as Jimmy pulled out the ring, got down on one knee, and popped the question, to which she of course said yes! After they both had a chance to recover and enjoy the moment, I was able to introduce myself to Jenna (who seemed incredibly confused as to who I was lol), and we got to shoot a few quick portraits before they ran off to dinner. I can’t thank Jimmy enough for allowing me to be there for such an important moment in their relationship, congrats again to you and Jenna!!
